The Sidekicks Come to Robert M. Kerr Twin Peaks Performance Hall

The Sidekicks will make their debut in Oklahoma and bring their brand of Western Swing, Classic Country, and Cajun Music to Quartz Mountain Resort on Saturday May 17.

The Sidekicks has been the opening band for the Bob Willis’ Texas Playboys at their Annual Cowboy Christmas Ball for several years. Since 2002, the band’s fast-moving performances have entertained the crowds at the Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso, NM, a cultural festival that draws 20,000 visitors each year.

Starting at 8 p. m. at the Robert M. Kerr Twin Peaks Performance Hall, the two-hour event, led by banjoist Wendell Sollis, will feature the many talented musicians including:

Grammy-winning guitarist Tommy Allsup has been described as one of the finest guitarists in the country. He’s been a music legend since his days with Buddy Holly and Waylon Jennings, when only a coin toss kept him off the plane that crashed and killed Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Ginny Mac is a vibrant vocalist-accordionist with over 20 music awards to her credit. Anyone that has seen her perform never forgets the experience. Ronny Dale Shultz is a versatile instrumentalist-vocalist who has performed with the top country western bands on guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin and trumpet. Shultz will play bass and perform vocals. Fiddle players are George Uptmor, well known for his Cajun sound, and Jimmy Young, known for Western Swing Music. Both have played and toured with many of today’s well-known country western bands and the Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys. The Sidekicks play everything to the rhythms of drummer Terry Thompson, a sought after musician, who doesn’t miss a beat.

Ashley Nicole Wheeler, 15, of Altus, will be a guest artist. She has performed with the Sidekicks as an opener for the Texas Playboys. She recently auditioned for the Johnnie High Music Revue and was chosen as one of the two finalists. She will perform again in the Johnnie High show, and a televised special later in the year.

For information about tickets or accommodations, call (580) 563-2424 or, toll free, (877) 999-5567 or contact J. W. Sollis, (940) 839-7870.

Bird watching at Quartz Mountain

Over 96 bird species have been identified in Quartz Mountain State Park including the Lark Sparrow, Swainson’s Hawk, the Eastern Bluebird, and the most colorful songbird in North America, the Painted Bunting.  During the winter bird watching season, when many species are migrating to their winter nesting grounds, Quartz Mountain Resort is hosting a photography contest on Flickr.com.  The best bird watching photo taken during at Quartz Mountain State Park will receive a complimentary resort stay.

Take advantage our Bird Watching Special, simply submit your Quartz Mountain birding photos to the Resort’s Flickr photo-sharing group online, and be registered to win a free return visit!

After a day of birding and hiking in the Oklahoma winter, be sure to enjoy the Resort’s lounge.  Toast your toes by the fire and warm up from the inside out with one of our signature cocktails.

There’s plenty for non-birders in the family to enjoy at Quartz Mountain Resort as well.  Hiking our trails, relaxing in front of the fire in our newly renovated lounge, or enjoying the art gallery will keep everyone happy.
